Greetings from the Oracle

The Oracle Database is a term one can’t escape much in IT. What is it? Where did it come from? What does it do?

 

The Oracle Database (commonly referred to as Oracle RDBMS or simply as Oracle) is an object-relational database management system produced and marketed by Oracle Corporation. The name Oracle comes from the code-name of a CIA project Larry Ellison had worked on while previously employed by Ampex.

Larry Ellison is the founder of the Oracle corporation in case you are wondering. The company was founded in  1977.

 

What we will give you here is ‘bragging rights’... For more details come for class!! (Smiles). So what is a database? It is a storage for data/information... You could say it is an arranged format in which strings of data is stored. The Oracle Database stores data logically in the form of tablespaces and physically in the form of data files. (Confused?? Come for class!!)

 

So what’s up with all this 10g, 11g, 12c?? Let’s try and make us get it. Well it follows a naming convention. After 10g was released, Oracle started using the ‘g’ suffix for all her major releases. So what of 12c? Or 11i? You see the letters stand for Grid, Internet, and Cloud...
